Winter Hill Gang is established in Somerville.

The organized crime gang is led by Howard Winter. James “Whitey” Bulger, Stephen Flemmi, John Martorano, Joe MacDonald and Jimmy Sims are other principal members. It is supposedly formed when Bulger suggests there is room for another crime group in Boston in addition to the North End based Mafia, headed by Gennaro Angiulo. Although based in Somerville, the gang operates in South Boston and other parts of the city.
